The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) is a computer-based English language test trusted by universities, colleges and governments around the world. What is PTE Academic?

PTE Academic is the world’s leading computer-based test of English for study abroad and immigration. It is the fastest, computer-based English test and allows you to demonstrate the full range of your language skills. PTE Academic assesses listening, reading, speaking and writing- all via computer in a single three-hour test session. To complete a PTE Academic test, you will need to attend a secure Pearson test centre. You will use a computer and a headset to listen to, read and respond to questions. What is the Test Format?

During the three-hour test session, there are three main parts to the test: speaking and writing (completed together), listening, and reading. There is also an optional 10-minute break between the reading and listening parts. During the test, you will find twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choice to essay writing and interpreting information.

PART 1: SPEAKING AND WRITING

SPEAKING (5 tasks)

  • Read aloud (6-7 tasks)
  • Repeat the sentence (10-12 tasks)
  • Describe image (6 -7 tasks)
  • Re-tell lecture (3 – 4 tasks)
  • Answer short questions (10 – 12 tasks)

WRITING (2 tasks)

  • Summarize written text (5 – 75 words)
  • Essay (200 – 300 words) (Writing skills assessed) (1-2 tasks)

PART 2: READING (32 - 41 minutes)

  • Reading and Writing skills accessed (5 to 6 tests)
  • Multiple choice (MC) single answer (2 – 3 tasks)
  • Multiple choice (MC) multiple answers (2 – 3 tasks)
  • Reorder paragraph (2 – 3 tasks)
  • Reading – Fill in the blanks ( 4 – 5 tasks)
  • Reading, writing fill in the blanks (5 – 6 tasks)

PART 3: LISTENING: (45 - 57 minutes)

  • Summarize spoken test (2- 3 tasks)
  • Multiple choice (MC) single answer (2 – 3 tasks)
  • Multiple choice (MC) multiple answers (2 – 3 tasks)
  • Fill in the blanks (2 – 3 tasks)
  • Highlight correct summary (2- 3 tasks)
  • Select missing word (2 – 3 tasks)
  • Highlight incorrect words (2- 3 tasks)
  • Write from dictation (3 – 4 tasks)
